A Hunger for Land: the early settlement of Australia

Author(s): Australian Geographic

History

Almost from the start the European colonisers ignored the rights of the original inhabitants of Australia. The indigenous peoples' tenure came from a land where property was only for the rich - here it was theirs for the taking. Indigenous resistance failed to stop Europeans securing the finest grazing and farming lands, and land ownership grew into an Australian obsession.
